Asbestos removal - Mecklenburg County
Huntersville had 1,004 residents in 1960 and 61,376 in 2020, which makes its housing some of the newest around Charlotte: the Census Bureau's 2020-2024 survey puts only about 7 percent of its homes before 1980, with a median build year of 2004. Its northwestern edge follows the Lake Norman shoreline, 14 miles north of Uptown.
Huntersville had 1,004 residents in 1960. By 2020 it had 61,376, and nearly all of the houses they live in were built along the way. The median Huntersville home dates from 2004, and only about 7 percent of its housing was built before 1980, the lowest share of any town around Charlotte. Most of the town is planned subdivisions between I-77 and the Lake Norman shoreline.
The roughly 7 percent of older homes are where most of the work is: farmhouses and early houses around the old town center on NC-115, Old Statesville Road, and scattered pre-1980 houses that predate the subdivisions around them. In those, the usual suspects apply: floor tile and its adhesive, textured ceilings, pipe insulation and cement siding.
A newer house lowers the odds but does not prove a material is free of asbestos. The North Carolina Health Hazards Control Unit recommends an inspection before any renovation or demolition, single-family homes included, and notes that some products containing asbestos can still be bought today. For a 2000s house the practical answer is usually a quick sample of the specific material you are about to remove, not a whole-house survey.
Huntersville is in Mecklenburg County, so Mecklenburg County Air Quality handles asbestos notices here: 10 working days before a regulated demolition or renovation, with an asbestos inspection report attached to any demolition notice.
